Our South African wildlife gallery represents a small sample of the hundreds of species of wildlife found in South Africa. (The term ‘wildlife’ refers to mammals, birds, fish and reptiles that can be found in the wild). There are 299 mammal species in South Africa, of which 2 are critically endangered, 11 are endangered, 15 are vulnerable, and 13 are near-threatened (conservation status as assessed by the IUCN).

  1. South Africa is now my home once again, but remember, it is the third most dangerous country in the world. The weather is wonderful, with temperatures ranging from 32.C to 40.C+ depending on how far north you go during summer.  At Kruger National the temperature was 41.C the last time I was there. Hermanus in Western Cape is the place for whale watching, mainly Right whales, (named because whalers called them the right whale to catch).

Cape Town is the jewel, being on the Atlantic side you will see the penguins, whales and even great whites.  Be prepared for baboons, they are fearless of people, in some areas you may see them sitting on roofs.  Nevertheless, South Africa has a wonderfully rich culture and this you will see if you go to the living museums just outside Joburg.  If you can afford it, try Sun City, it's very expensive but palatial, and don't forget the the wonderful street markets, try a mootty market.  If you decide to come, I don't think you will regret it.

  2. Hyenas are more closely related to cats than dogs. The narrator said at one point "These dogs…" when referring to them. Don't be deceived by appearances.
