Clean India: Working Models of Rural Waste Management

In rural areas of India, solid and liquid waste remains largely untreated and dumped in the open, posing a severe threat to public health and environment. It is estimated that nearly 18,000 million liters of liquid waste and 0.4 million metric tons of solid waste is generated each day in rural areas of India. Adopting effective systems at scale is the only reliable way to dispose this waste safely and sustainably. Several working models of waste management in rural parts of the country have been successfully implemented not only at the household, but also at the institutional and community level. This video, produced by the World Bank Water and Sanitation Program in partnership with Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation, Government of India, shares these models, the selected technology options, and how they work.

  1. This is how we can make this project grow. In Canada the school systems have every young person complete 40 hours of community service if they want to graduate high school. Canada is doing very well environmentally for a number of reasons but this helps too. If we do this is in Indian schools for waste pollution things can change.

  4. i m an indian and i dont think that india is going up! look at the indian economics bro. i love india, but look at the lifestyle of common people(not villagers or poor). the colonies aren't clean, no greenery, narrow roads full of traffic.do u think these things need to be rectified when india gets develoed like america.but america was better even when it was a developing country. govt. is the main culprit.and who are they? they are people from us!

  11. This only shows how immature you are and how narrow you think. Believe it or not India is developing country not yet developed. So you can't expect everything to change here by the night. In fact India has helped USA in many ways. I don't care what you think, but India is improving and the video that you see here is one such example.

  12. You are right…I wish if American companies would invest in such bio gas generation and recycling projects here in Indian villages. This could be a more of a motivation for people in your country to implement biogas generation and utilization.
