Climate Change: What Do Scientists Say?

Climate change is an urgent topic of discussion among politicians, journalists and celebrities…but what do scientists say about climate change? Does the data validate those who say humans are causing the earth to catastrophically warm? Richard Lindzen, an MIT atmospheric physicist and one of the world’s leading climatologists, summarizes the science behind climate change. Donate today to PragerU: http://l.prageru.com/2eB2p0h

Script:

I’m an atmospheric physicist. I’ve published more than 200 scientific papers. For 30 years I taught at MIT, during which time the climate has changed remarkably little. But the cry of “global warming” has grown ever more shrill. In fact, it seems that the less the climate changes, the louder the voices of the climate alarmists get. So, let’s clear the air and create a more accurate picture of where we really stand on the issue of global warming or, as it is now called—“climate change.”

There are basically three groups of people dealing with this issue. Groups one and two are scientists. Group three consists mostly, at its core, of politicians, environmentalists and the media.

Group one is associated with the scientific part of the United Nation’s International Panel on Climate Change or IPCC (Working Group 1). These are scientists who mostly believe that recent climate change is primarily due to man’s burning of fossil fuels—oil, coal and natural gas. This releases C02, carbon dioxide, into the atmosphere and, they believe, this might eventually dangerously heat the planet.

Group two is made up of scientists who don’t see this as an especially serious problem. This is the group I belong to. We’re usually referred to as skeptics.

We note that there are many reasons why the climate changes—the sun, clouds, oceans, the orbital variations of the earth, as well as a myriad of other inputs. None of these is fully understood, and there is no evidence that CO2 emissions are the dominant factor.

But actually there is much agreement between both groups of scientists. The following are such points of agreement:

1) The climate is always changing.

2) CO2 is a greenhouse gas without which life on earth is not possible, but adding it to the atmosphere should lead to some warming.

3) Atmospheric levels of CO2 have been increasing since the end of the Little Ice Age in the 19th century.

4) Over this period (the past two centuries), the global mean temperature has increased slightly and erratically by about 1.8 degrees Fahrenheit or one degree Celsius; but only since the 1960’s have man’s greenhouse emissions been sufficient to play a role.

5) Given the complexity of climate, no confident prediction about future global mean temperature or its impact can be made. The IPCC acknowledged in its own 2007 report that “The long-term prediction of future climate states is not possible.”

  1. WTF!??!! You're supposed to be a scientist. Where are the links to your peer reviewed published articles providing evidence for your claims? All I see are a bunch of links to donate to PragerU, or spend money on PragerU merchandise. Scam alert!

  3. 0:30 Less than a minute and one thing is wrong. Climate change and global warming are not the same, climate change is any radical change in climate (duh) at global scale, the Ice Age was a climate change, for example. Global warming, is an increase in global temperature produced by the increase of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. Global warming is a type of climate change, climate change is different from global warming.

And you are the teacher? This is going to be fun…

  4. Guys were not going to be able to destroy the planet, it has survived worse than what were doing to it, we`ll just destroy for ourselfs and all other current life on earth that cant adapt fast enough to climate changes. So Im not trying to save the planet, Im trying to get us to do something more selfish than that, which is saving human kind.

  5. so tired of everyone just talking about CO2 when talking about man`s effect on climate change and the enviroment around us. There`s so much more to it that is atleast as harmful, take changing ph-levels in water for example

  6. The title of the video is "Climate Change: What Do Scientists Say?", giving of a neutral and informative vibe when coming in on this.
When viewing the video, it becomes very quickly clear that the title of the video should rather be: "Climate Change: Why most scientists are wrong about it."
That title would be far more accurate, since that is what this guy is arguing about. Additionally, he did not cite any sources, he provided hardly any numbers (such as how big group 1 is compared to group 2), and argued only for group 2, while trying hard to dismiss the arguments of group 1. He was clearly presenting his personal opinioin, mixed with some facts. Not facts, facts without opinions such as the video initially advertised. That is willfully misleading and I am calling him out for it. As a scientist who clearly attempts to stay serious throughout the video, he should know better than to mislead his crowd.

Another gripe I have with this video, one of many, is that he said that group 1 /believes/ that CO2 is responsible for global warming, while group 2 /knows/ (just listen to his choice of words. Couldn't be more biased.) that climate change is due to a lot of other factors.
This makes it look like group 1 thinks all those factors that group 2 acknowledges play no role in climate change at all, which, again, is willfully misleading. Sure, he didn't say it out loud, but by comparing group 1 with group 2 like that, he is very strongly implying that, and it just keeps going on throughout the video.

This is hardly a scientific video. It's just his own personal opinion, and he is trying to undermine it by appealing to his own authority rather than with actual sources. Get your crap together, man.

  7. Reality mocks the Climate Cult! Thanks for your sanity Richard! We need optimization, not elimination!

In 2017, AGW is defined as 'Al Gore's Wrong'!!!
