What would it take to get to a carbon free world? We, as a community, are going to need mindset transformation to make that happen.

Key words: energy, climate, carbon free, grit, community

Lauren is a PhD student at Harvard University in Earth and Planetary Sciences. She studies climate dynamics and the hurdles we must overcome to reach a low carbon future.

This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at http://ted.com/tedx

  1. Do any of your hots allow you to touch them without snake hooks? Not that ypu or anyone should try but are there any that you think would let you. I watched one video where the snake went from the hook onto the guys arm and just chilled out there. He gets really personal with his animals though so I'm not surprised his bond with them is incredible but are there any in your care you think would be so friendly.

  2. Maybe getting too much UV in captivity? Just a guess….human skin evolves darker to protect from too much sun…made me wonder.

  3. Gosh love those Green Mamba's and she sure was chilled out 😉 I know some people think I'm crazy when I tell them that snakes are actually very proud animals and they really display that pride in so many different ways !! People swear that snakes aren't capable of expressing any form of emotions yet if you can train a snake with a hook they do learn routines and if they take offense they vocalize and if provoked they will strike out and all of these different behaviors aren't purely driven by instincts but by their feelings based on certain stimuli.

  4. Best channel on Youtube! Beautiful creatures. I wish more people gave snakes a chance instead of treating them like evil monsters out for blood.

  5. only pointing out the problem's and not coming with solutions will not help.
Yes, renewables on their own will not be 100% enough, but they are a step in the right direction.
Last thing we want is go back to stone age.

  6. Schills working for oil industry?
It's a myth that solar panels don't produce electricity on cloudy days, It won't produce as much but it still generates electricity! It depends on panel type and density of clouds, Some panels can capture more red and blue wavelengths so even on overcast days they are producing electricity.
I live in Melbourne which is hot in summer and freezing in winter, Electricity bill is almost ZERO even with big tv, computer, air conditioners, 4kw solar panel system on roof does fine even in winter and next stage will be to add battery like Tesla wall when it gets cheap enough and be completely self reliant.
Enough sunlight falls on the planet in just one hour to power the entire planet for a year and that is just solar which is now over 20% in worldwide usage, Then we have wind, wave and geothermal we can tap into.
Some countries have reached 100% renewable and others are on the way.

People always use lame excuse of saying that energy is wasted in making the panels, But they don't take into account those panels will be producing for 30 years once they are up unlike fossils fuels which have to be constantly mined and transported!
Until Fusion is a thing we can definitely run entirely on renewables but that means a shift on industry and even world politics(oil industry looking at you).
