Meet Jana Compton, she is a research ecologist at EPA’s National Health and Environmental Effects Laboratory located in Corvallis, OR. Jana’s research focuses on water quality and the impacts of nutrient pollution, like nitrogen and phosphorous, on water quality. Nutrient pollution is one of America’s most widespread, costly and challenging environmental problems. Nitrogen and phosphorous are necessary elements and support the growth of algae and aquatic plants which provide food and habitat for fish and other organisms that live in the water. But when we have too much, usually from a range of human activities, the air and water can become polluted. Jana’s research looks at sources of nutrient pollution and strategies to reduce and control nutrient pollution.
