Harrison Ford travels to Indonesia in 2013 to investigate how the world’s appetite for palm oil – an ingredient in everything from candy bars to laundry detergent – has led to massive deforestation and turned Indonesia into one of the world’s largest emitters of greenhouse gases.

  1. 1. What are the environmental and social impacts of palm oil production?
    2. In what products do you find this oil?
    3. Did you learn something new by watching this video?

  2. I am Indonesian. I just knew that 3 years ago Zulkifli Hasan was Minister of Forest. I am really disappointed to his answers. He seemed to assume that all the problems in this country are because Indonesia has recently reformed. So you just waiting to be balanced? Please, you have the power!. Hmm, I do not know why you can become Chairman of the People's Consultative Assembly now.

  3. In fact, the farm animal sector annually accounts for:
9% of human-induced emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2),
    7
37% of emissions of methane (CH4), which has more than 20 times the global warming potential (GWP)
    of CO2,
    8
    and
65% of emissions of nitrous oxide (N2O), which has nearly 300 times the GWP of CO2.

Farm Animals in the United States
Nearly 10 billion land animals are raised for meat, eggs, and milk annually in the United States,
    10,11 with many
of them confined in the nation’s approximately 18,80012 concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs).
    13
Typical factory farms intensively restrict animals in large, overcrowded, and barren sheds, denying them the
ability to engage in most of their natural behavior.*
Greenhouse Gas Emissions and Factory Farms
Farm animal waste and other aspects of the animal agriculture sector generate GHG emissions, as well as
    ammonia14 and other airborne pollutants.

  4. So , the biggest palmoil importers are not Indonesian companies but global players, right? And they reside in western countries mostly. It's like blaming Columbia and Laos ONLY for drugs production…

  6. 105 billion sq.m of land been cleared for palm oil, 550 billion sq.m of land been cleared for animal agriculture. Animal agriculture is responsible for 65% of all emissions. Maybe you should have started from the amazon Ford? Stop misdirecting people.
