Choosing a Water Heater | Consumer Reports

Consumer Reports tests water heaters to help you choose the right type for your home. Most people buy a standard water heater, but you can save energy with a solar water heater or a tankless water heater. Or you might consider a hybrid water heater.

  1. I filled this video today and successfully replace my water heater, just FYI attribute sells couplings to attach the pipe for the overflow valve, so now no speeding needed. I saved 450$ on an install from a plumber, YEAH!!!!
    Thank you home mender!

  2. I think I would have first sweated the pipe onto the fitting to thread onto the overflow valve as to avoid cooking the pipe dope! But still I like your video & thank you for your sharing it.

  3. Great video. Woke up this morning to water all over the floor. Heater blew a hole out the side last night. I guess asking for more than 14 years was just asking for too much…

I will be doing this job next weekend and wanted to see a couple vids of it being done. Yours was simple to understand and easy to follow. Thank you.

  4. So if I am heating my basement with an oil fired boiler and using a hybrid water heater, I am simply converting my electric bill into a fuel bill for the boiler in the winter. Electricity is way cheaper than fuel oil. Where is my savings?

  5. I don't believe there is any difference between a water heater with a 6 year warranty of a 12 year except for a built in cost of an extended warranty. Until someone proves me wrong I Just don't believe it because my 12 year heater lasted 8.5 years. There are so many similar strokes on the internet of heaters that don't even come close to reaching warranty. The scam is that you pay twice as much for a 12 year heater while a high percentage of people loose their receipts, sell their house, or simply forgot they had a warranty.

  6. A high efficiency condensing gas water heater like the AO Smith Vertex operates at 96% efficiency and uses cheap natural gas.
A hybrid waterheater uses heat from the surrounding air.  If you paid to heat that air you will end up paying twice (sort of). If you live in a warm climate and can install the heatpump water heater (correct name for it)  in a garage then its a good idea.  Just remember, it probably is no cheaper than gas high efficiency, it runs a noisy compressor and should be carefully installed.  Your utility probably has information on this.
