  2. I was told in grade school, grade 4, ten years old. The real sizes for camparison were on the globe. The mercator maps were for naviagation.

  3. every culture centres its maps on itself it is the way it has always been, how in Gods name can a map be racist? people live where they live colour or culture has nothing to do with it, everything must have a start and in maping and in laying out a house you pick a point which becomes your bench mark all other levels and distances are measured from it, Lloyd Pye might have had many insights into many things but maps and how our 3D world is rendered onto a 2D sheet of paper in scale he clearly didnt understand,

  4. You must run now to buy his books and dvds! Cmon, if the map weren't right then the ISS wouldn't fly and the US troops wouldn't get to Iraq/Afghanistan..

  5. Its a Mercator map. Its intentions aren't to deceive nor to educate. Has never been claimed to be accurate either. Its just impossible to map something that's round on a flat surface.

  7. Lloyd Pye was a charlatan.
The map is constructed to fit on a page for easy viewing, not to brainwash folk into a false sense of dimensions.
If you desire ACCURATE dimensions – any decent globe will do.
Are you guys really naive enough to even consider a conspiracy behind the world map?
Give Lloyd Pye a wide berth guys – He was a struggling writer, desperate to make a name for himself using any outrageous claims that easily complied with unsupported science.

  8. What's wrong with racism? Nothing if you want your race and culture to survive. Why shouldn't he have been Euro-centric? These were the days before the insanity of human equality began destroying the West.

  9. When a struggling fiction writer plagiarizes (or at least heavily borrows) someone else’s theory to sell a book, and then that writer happens upon an artifact of this significance and treats it like P.T. Barnum instead of undergoing real scientific inquiry,  one has to wonder how authentic it truly is.

  11. There's lot's of projections for world maps, distortion is inherent to taking a sphere and stretching it out onto a plane. There is no way around it, basic geometry. Mercator is useful for exactly the purpose it was designed for: navigation. A straight line on a mercator map is also a straight line in real life. The same cannot be said for any other projection. While there are maps made to look more proportional, they aren't very functional. There's a tradeoff there. National Geographic publishes a great nice looking but non-functional world map for that.

It also amazes me that despite Africa and not Europe being put dead center on a modern world map, people still find a way to complain about white man being evil and racist.

  12. We could hardly draw maps 100% correctly in the middle ages, because we didn't have fucking satellites and the mathematical formulas. Not because we were racist.
