Most Endangered Species & Threatened Species: Endangered Lions – On the IUCN Endangered Species List

Most Endangered Species & Threatened Species – Endangered Lions – On the IUCN Endangered Species List

Endangered species are species that the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) have categorized as likely to become extinct. The most widely known list of endangered and threatened species is the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.

1,102 animals and 1,197 plants were on the Red List in 1998. Today the numbers have virtually tripled. 3,079 animals and 2,655 plants are now on the Red List. More than 40% are the most endangered species and are at risk for extinction.

Approximately 500 Asiatic lions are alive in the wild. At the turn of the century they were categorized as “critically endangered” on the Red List. Since then their numbers have stabilized and they are now considered to be “endangered” animals. Many people feel that African lions, which are currently categorized as “vulnerable,” should be on the endangered species list as well.

A century ago more than 200,000 lions roamed the African continent. Their numbers have steadily dropped and they are now extinct in 26 countries in Africa.

Today between 32,000 and 35,000 exist in the wild. There were twice as many African lions 22 years ago. Habitat loss and trophy hunting are the primary causes of the decline in Africa’s lion population.

Many of the remaining prides of lionesses, lions and lion cubs are either too small or too isolated to be able to sustain themselves.
This short video focuses on lions, lionesses and adorable little lion cubs. See them court, eat and play. Watching these wonderful creatures will surely put a smile on your face. Please consider what their loss would mean to the world.

This lecture explains about the Extinct species and endangered species in india and how we evaluate endangered species and extinct species. An Endangered (EN) species is a species which has been categorized by way of the worldwide Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) purple record as more likely to emerge as extinct. “Endangered” is the second most severe conservation reputation for wild populations within the IUCN’s schema after seriously Endangered (CR).

In 2012, the IUCN purple record featured 3079 animal and 2655 plant species as Endangered (EN) international. The figures for 1998 were, respectively, 1102 and 1197.[citation needed]

Many countries have laws that guard conservation-reliant species: for example, forbidding hunting, limiting land progress or developing preserves. Populace numbers, traits and species’ conservation fame may also be discovered within the lists of organisms by means of populace.
