Off Grid Solar Powered RV Air Conditioning – Is it Possible?

Get all the gear details, more of our solar AC thoughts and research on our site here: http://www.gonewiththewynns.com/off-grid-solar-rv-air-conditioning

We had a simple question: Is it possible to power an Air Conditioner off solar when living off the grid? With our RV we decided to do a temporary wiring swap and test run our AC to see if running an air conditioner off our solar, battery and inverter is realistic or not.

  1. fake… that's not your motorhome. this looks like a professional produced commercial. you couldn't afford that rig at your age. how stupid do you think we are?

  2. There is many problems they did not resolve first. The answer is… Of course you can…AND you can make it much more effective and efficient. All that was required to know it will work is some simple math. The airconditioner would be better if different capasistors were installed in the A/C unit so upon initial startup it would not draw nearly as hard. These A/C accessories are readily available on line. Next the Solar panels and batteries are most likely wired wrong. The Inverter has a step up transformer and it uses about 40% of the incoming power. That transformer can be bypassed allowing less energy requirement. I have all this equipment and experience to do this and will most likely do a video on it when I make the alterations and install my solar panels.

  4. How many btu is your a/c?
    I have a 4000 watt inverter with 2500 watts of solar and a 80 amp solar controller. My a/C is 13k btu but it has a (micro air corp)easy start system on it so my compressor start up amperage is virtually the exact as the running amperage. The inverter is 24 volt system that uses 2 banks of (4) 6 volt batteries, my total amp hours of battery is 440. I can't run ac all night but I can run it endlessly during the day as long as the sun is shining!

  5. I live in Tucson. At Soutwest Solar they have solar evaporative coolers for RVs, Rigs, Trucks, cars, and homes. Check it out. I am getting one for my RV.

  6. Do you guys always run your AC that cold? I keep my thermostat set on 80 all year, it's a nice doable and comfortable temp.

  7. Yes if you only know the basics of electronics let say Air con unit input needs voltage of 220v/1000watts basically u need an output power of a solar power 220v/1500watts and if you are using Battery or inverter of course you need also to 220v/1500watts and if possible double your output power (watt). This is so easy if you only knowlegeable in Electronics.
    Power – (Watt)
    I – (Ampere)
    V – (Voltage)
    Power = IV
    Power = Current * Voltage
