Oil Apocalypse: What If the Oil Runs Out?

Peak oil, an event based on M. King Hubbert’s theory, is the point in time when the maximum rate of extraction of petroleum is reached, after which the rate of production is expected to enter terminal decline. Peak oil theory is based on the observed rise, peak, (sometimes rapid) fall, and depletion of aggregate production rate in oil fields over time. Mostly due to the development of new production techniques and the exploitation of unconventional supplies, Hubbert’s original predictions for world production proved premature. Peak oil is often confused with oil depletion; peak oil is the point of maximum production, while depletion refers to a period of falling reserves and supply.

This is a quick journey through the subjects of oil formation, peak oil, energy, economic growth, and resource depletion. I’ve condensed several years of reading and research into little over half an hour. The most important sequence is around the 17min mark, dealing with Growth…the real subject of the TNT.

  1. We will not run out of oil. This BS has been spewed since the 70s yet we've kept discovering more recoverable oil.  The US has hundreds of years worth of oil, natural gas, and coal.

  2. Total fear porn. The only reason we're fracking is big business.
There is 'abiotic' and Fossil oil. A lot of old shut down wells are being put
back into production. Oil is seeping back in the site.
We aren't hardly touching the north slope reserves.
There are massive oil reserves world wide. No one can say how many centuries
we have left. The real issue is halting environmental disasters.
Remember aprox 10% of each barrel goes for fuel the rest for materials.

  3. by the time the world runs out of oil everyone reading this would have been dead hundreds of years. You cannot worry about what might happen, life is uncertain. worry about asteroids if you need something to fret over

  4. Why is anyone worrying all you have to do is collect all the used oil from fish and chip shops and the worlds fuel problem is solved.I have seen it on reputable shows on TV.

  5. We seem to have a lot of possible ways to get around this, and we have more than enough time right now. 50 years is a lot of time. we've made nuclear bombs within 20 years, and phones, cars, and other things. I think we can make something work.

  6. Everybody who asks 'what are we gonna do?': do not breed. Life will get worse but you can limit the suffering by not making new people to suffer. Nobody ever suffered the greenhouse effect on Venus….there's nobody there. The universe doesn't need us (to suffer) ;-)

  7. You forgot the fact that the nuclear fuel can be recycled and that we have vast quantities of non fissile uranium which can be transmuted to plutonium.

  8. Or we become an space-faring planet colonizing galactic civilization lasting through millennia climbing the civilization ladder to infinity. Elon Musk!

  9. Agriculture is our ability to turn fuel into food.. .  .Rather like a few fish in a tank that discover a great deal of food.. .  . Just underneath the surface soil.  . ..So they start to consume, and multiply by the number's .. .  . Until there's no food left.. .  .So they then have to eat other!!.. .  .Can you feel them eating you yet?
