Stella Solar Powered Car

Stella, the first ever family sized road vehicle that runs on the sun has made its U.S. debut. While other solar-powered vehicles have been made for racing, the solar-powered Stella is the first vehicle made for road travel. A large solar panel sits atop the roof to power the car up to 500 miles on a single charge. Sarah Buhr goes for a ride in the the Stella, the first four seater solar powered car.

  1. Bit misleading because higher speeds make a big difference to power usage. Also a large battery can increase range a lot but he didn't specify the size.

  3. This car looks way too low for the road. Imagine snow, and bumps. That car would not make it. No one will buy a car that is as much as a house. That doesn't make any sense why someone would buy this, or why they are even thinking about this idea — if it's that much money.

  4. Someone needs to design a solar panel paint/skin you can put on cars. Like plant leaves produce energy from sunlight. Make some sort of paint that can take in sunlight.

  5. economy of scale will take care of cost, the potential is fantastic because this electric car doesn't need an electric infrastructure to work. and i really like the interior design of the Stella Lux

  6. the end of blood oil and gas is coming soon, which means more money for better solar powered cars that you can afford no war over this one, and no one died to fill your tank.

  8. tilt the canopy rather than move the car
    and put solar panels on the bonnet … most people only need 10 miles a day or less to get to work shops and back so i dont know why people moaning about these things :P

  9. Cant believe that Ford is the one that figured out to make the roof a solar charger for a electric car! Especially in south Fla. It is a freaking oven here in the summer,it can recharge that car in a few hours the sun is so intense!! Of course they will make it at an outrageous price. But you's think that they would sell it at some discount in states that at VERY 'sun rich', Like south Fla, Arizona, New Mexico, etc…give us a break on the price, and it would give them a boost in sales, by being able to say, 'look at how well it charges in these states'……probably not a great idea up in New Hampshire in winter, but hell in Fla. it would charge all the time during the day…and not have to plug it in at all…wow! Someone must be reading my posts.
    Now if they would just get rid of all the stupid electric sapping options like heated steering wheels!, they would get more miles per charge.

  10. you know how some people run out of gas a lot because they are too poor to fill up, and push their luck til their out on the road somewhere. With this car they can just sit at the side of the road and charge up….although would be out of luck at night or if cloudy

  11. very good idea. i thought too that since frennel lenses are usually flexible plastic, there could possibly be a portable version done of the canopy that could be taken wherever the car goes on like a roof rack attachment as well as carrying a space frame in either the spare spaces in the front or back of the car. of

What are the cons for these actually..cause this is actually have great potential and actually i have seen thiz kind of technology in a camper van such as free spirit mercedes van converter or pleasure van plateu and ascend.well actually the they are not using the solar power for the fuel, as it using diesel fuel, however beside the in-van generator they also use solar energy to use the hot water, television, air conditioner, recharger for gadget battery, electric sofa bed ..even wifh microwave and refrigerator wich usually cost a lot of energy(well for this one maybe they used propane or in house generator..please correct me if i am wrong)..so we can live in the middle of nowhere for weeks without electricity bills..and it is automatically disconect the solar power energy to the battery when it is fully recharged, so the battery logically wont be having overheat status and can have lo ger durability…

  13. 300W * 10 hours = 0.75 gallon of gas = $3 per day = $1000 per year. Please come to market as quickly as possible. Better standalone to install on any hybrids.
