The breakthrough in renewable energy (vpro backlight documentary)

It’s not in the papers but a silent revolution is moving across the world. Renewable energy is becoming cheaper than from fossil fuels. It means that progressively the choice for wind and solar energy is no longer an ethical one but an economic one. And this will speed up the transfer to renewable energy.

In countries like Brazil, Australia, Chile and parts of the United States people consider renewable energy because of financial reasons. The price of solar and wind energy will continue to drop and in more countries renewable energy will occur.

A surprising newcomer on the market is Morocco, where the government expects that in 2020 more than 40 percent of the energy could come from solar energy.

  1. Start a water pipe making company which makes pipes that generate electricity when there is water runs through them after storms and heavy rain during the summer or winter so that people can use the electricity for air-cons and radiators. Will it work?

  2. How to have constant solar energy for the world:
    1. Set up large-scale solar panels in Africa (Sahara desert), Mexico and US (deserts) and Australia (desert)
    2. As Earth rotates, there is always daylight somewhere in the world
    3. ???
    4. Profit.

  3. Brilliant Documentary! It's re-assured my life-long dream of solar and renewable energy autonomy on micro and macro scales.
Finally it is the dawn of the world's sustainable future, in every sense.

  4. Denmark 57% renewable in electricity 2014
Denmark 67% renewable in heat  2016

It should be possible, to reach 100% in the next eight years.

  5. This is sadly depressing from an American perspective where we have "successfully" succeeded in politicizing science, technology, energy and economics.

  6. in most of the world solar only works 10% of the time, can't be stored and out of sync with need. Power peak demands are breakfast, supper, evenings and winter. Its called capacity factor, 10kW of solar panels, intermittent, undependable and out of sync are really only 1kW of solar. Cover these parts of the world with solar panels, and you still need firm power (duplicated power) when its dark, cloudy and it overlaps firm power. This documentary is only correct if at all, in the sunniest parts of the world with air conditioning demands in sync with when solar power is made.

  7. Excellent documentary. Do we have screening rights to show this to for free to a small community group of ~50 people?

  9. THANK GOD! HOLY ON HIGH FOREVER!!!!!! USE THE SUN TO COOL THE POLES WITH LIQUID NITROGEN. IT'S NOT THAT HARD TO FIGURE OUT. SINCE THE INSIDE OF THE PLANT IS COOLING OUR INDIVIDUAL HOMES WILL KEEP US WARM.

  10. The final magic bullet for insuring large scale use of renewable energy is mass energy storage. Scientists and grid engineers have really struggled with with part of the renewable energy and it looks like the technology has finally maturing.

  11. Encouraging and fascinating documentary! But will a government corrupted by fossil fuel money get in the way? We need to see that it doesn't, and quickly. The political landscape of the incoming Trumpo administration in particular seems problematic.

  12. You dont save the world by buying renewable power equipment producers,
you save it by building the plants that supply the power. Just look at
the destruction of value in ALL solar power equipment producers over the
last year and you will see why. Operating margins are negative. LOL.
Build the power plants, not the manufacturers.

  13. Exceptionally good documentary, explaining the economic and financial facts which I have been trying to explain to people for years. Great stuff. I'm sharing it everywhere.

  14. The idea of using an electric car as storage is perhaps not very economical, as it might reduce the longevity of the batteries. If it where very cheap to replace the battery in the car it might work, but when you add the labour cost it just isn't economical. The price of energy storage is getting lower and lower, but the cost of labour only goes up.
