Dumping electronic waste onto the developing world is a hazardous but profitable business. What is being done to regulate the problem and improve recycling efforts at home?

Every year, Americans upgrade their TVs, cell phones, computers and other electronic devices at a breathtaking pace. The Environmental Protection Agency estimates that the U.S. produces 300 million tons of electronic waste annually. About 80 percent of that ends up in domestic landfills or is “recycled” overseas in hazardous conditions.

Disposing of e-waste legally and responsibly has been a political and a practical headache for years. And a growing appetite for consumerism around the world is only fueling the problem.

“Illegal trash trade: E-waste smuggling contaminate developing countries”

Disposing of electronic waste these days somehow resembles dumping radioactive waste in a third-world country: it’s illegal, but profitable. Millions of tons of used electronics end up in Asia and Africa, where recycling is a big yet dangerous business.

  2. All I saw was a thriving scrap business, problem? Sure when you add ominous music and a dude telling you how awful it is, anything can seem bad.

  3. Global warming is slowly thawing out a once top-secret subterranean U.S. nuclear base in northern Greenland, potentially exposing the environment to radioactive coolant, PCBs, and raw sewage that the military originally believed would stay entombed for millennia.
The World's militaries are the biggest polluters and the biggest user of fossil fuels. They totally free from regulation, and dump high level NUCLEAR WASTE. It is just as disgraceful and EVIL as you can get. Fuck them.

  5. yeah, fat white people are fond of shipping their filth around to others on barges and then sitting on their expansive white assholes smug that they are clean while others are "dirty". haha the fuck face white man, most virulent filthy plague mankind has ever known. all they will leave behind for future generations is a world full of toxic filth and trillions of baggies full of dog shit yet they are sure they are the highest expression of man that has ever been. lmao

  6. It seems like our industrial complex(or what's left of it) is missing out on a huge resource we could be efficiently and cleanly processing, and profiting on right HERE.

  7. Better off having robots safely / effectively sort the materials than to let these people hurt themselves and waste all the materials for actual recycling. Most of the materials are being lost as they ineffectively break apart devices looking only for tiny specs of gold aluminum and copper. Meanwhile, the more prevalent materials which are recyclable are burned or scattered after being broken…for ex: that amount of plastic, glass, & all the expensive chemicals / other metals like mercury would probably amass more value thanks to the bulk amount of it. Instead, they dont know what they are doing and only seek all the little specs of precious metal – destroying the other more valuable stuff in the process….its like watching someone burn money. My family has been in the recycling business for 3 generations, we do it professionally every day with DEP regulations etc. This 3rd world landfill is a waste of money – wish we could show them how to do it the right way!

  9. Once a pan a time america built things and they built things to last. example,i have a friend that has a cast iron gas stove built in 1955. he wanted a new stainless steal stove not because his old stove did not work, but because stainless seal is all the rage.the only thing wrong with his stove was the clock does not work and it was white old paint.think about this unless you buy a commercial stainless steal stove , the stainless steal stove like a resturaunt you are not getting the real deal.we have become a disposable society long ago.if you make things that fall apart you will make more money ,simply because people will have to buy your shit product more often.

  11. Thanks for posting and informing us about this e-waster disaster. How come Apple doesn't use their billions to create a recycling plant?? CHEAP GREEDY STEVE JOBS was an assohle for doing this to the Earth, I have zero respect for him after learning about this problem they started and are continuing! Our consumer based lifestyle of use and trash is really lame and pathetic. Shame on Apple and Microsoft and all the countries who ship their E-waste to Ghana and other third world countries. I hope those who make money off of this racket drink the poisonous water one day by accident. It would serve them right for not taking care of their e-waste. Do mechanics just dump the used oil and other fluids down the drain, or storm sewer to the ocean. Where's the regulations! This is the definition of out of control capitalism and greed! You want to make money that's fine but not at the expense of others health! Capitalism is fraud and abusive system and should be abandoned! Their goal is to exploit and fuck everyone else! I hope you spin around in the river Styx and see all the people you have hurt with your e-waste and trying to make a buck without thinking of the consequences. The more I'm around rich people the more I despise their selfish and toxic lives! BTW, I've noticed they might be rich but their family sucks, their kids have down syndrome and ADD, the husband cheats on the wife, and all the wife cares about is material things.. It's loser way to live! I'd rather just be middle class and spend time with my family. Money is tool, the goal is not to gather and store as much, you will die one day and it won't follow you to hell, time to burn for your sins of being an E waste polluter!!
