Compost is the very best food you can give to the plants in your garden. However, making really great compost requires the right mix of ingredients. In this video we demonstrate how to create that perfect recipe from the ingredients you have at home. You’ll see the compost mix being created, find out what materials to avoid, trace how the compost heap progresses as it ‘cooks’ and discover how to fix common problems.

could dead leaves and pinestraw be considered browns?
Read the Humanure Handbook… it explains why a proper compost takes longer and shouldn't take shortcuts. It also explains why you don't turn a proper compost, one factor is the reduction in temperature especially in cold climates… this video contradicting itself by suggesting speeding up the composting by turning it, but at the same time stating that the heat speeds up composting. Lastly it explains how you have already an abundant source of manure, so you don't have to rely on scraping by with what little manure is in that hamster cage.
Very nicely done! i dig a compost pit and fill it with my leaves during
fall, with wood chips, some bagged grass clipping from mowing, blood
meal, bunny poop, and sprinkle in kelp meal among the layers. i placed 2
PVC pipes and drilled holes in them for aeration. my plants love this
recipe. I have 200+ tomatoes on just one of my plants this year. This
is really the basis for the best veg garden hands down in my opinion!
start packin' your freezer, and happy gardening!
great video!
Veggie can most certainly go into compost but being a green keep a limit on that. Just like in worm composting you need a good balance greens and browns, more browns than greens.
Can I use ash as brown ingredients
Thank you very much for answering my question.
I enjoyed your video. Very informative. What to do with seeds?
Wow, I bet it smells very strong, doesn't it?
are dead leaves browns +GrowVeg
thank you!
Need some clarity. You said you can use guinea pigs bedding. so do you mean when I change the bedding I can throw it in the compost instead of throwing it away?
super informative! : )
thank you , best video on composting I've seen!
First Class Presentation

do you add soil to the compost? and also other people put worms, are worms required?
i need more browns….. I just started mine!!!
I'm a vegan, but the rest of my family eats lots of meat and dairy. We compost everything, and I use this compost in my vegetable garden. Is this a bad idea? As you said meat and dairy shouldn't be composted?
Composting doesnt need soil ??? I am such a newbie at this that my questions are too dumb. Please educate me on these as i could make other dumb people like me who are facing this extremely trivial problem of solid wastes.
