The Tech That Could Fix One of Wind Power’s Biggest Problems

June 21 — Hello World’s Ashlee Vance paid a recent visit to Iceland’s capital city of Reykjavik to see the next part of the green energy story. He found a start-up called Icewind that is building a new type of funky wind turbine designed to perform well in low-wind conditions but also to slow itself down in high-winds, preventing it from catching on fire or ripping apart.

The Enercon E-126 is a wind turbine model manufactured by the German company Enercon. With a hub height of 135 m (443 ft), rotor diameter of 126 m (413 ft) and a total height of 198 m (650 ft), this large model can generate up to 7.58 megawatts of power per turbine. The power output of the generator was changed from 6 MW to 7 MW after technical revisions were performed in 2009.
The weight of the foundation of the turbine tower is about 2,500 t, the tower itself 2,800 t, the machine housing 128 t, the generator 220 t, the rotor (including the blade) 364 t. The total weight is about 6,000 t.
The first turbine of this model was installed in Emden, Germany in 2007. The list price of one unit is million plus install costs.

  1. We can't have this!!!  This makes too much sense!!!  This would make wind power workable and profitable, and we can't have that!!!  We must continue with the wind technology we have, big huge towering wind generator's that don't work half of the time.  Our efforts in pushing global warming and climate change would be greatly harmed if people come up with solutions that work!!!  If people come up with workable solutions to this problem, I won't be able to bitch and mown about what a threat global warming and climate change is to mankind, (correction, I should have said "us", mankind is a sexist word) anyway, this idea is stupid, and so are you!!!

  2. Curious about the noise these fellas make. Powering small charging stations seems genius but if they're noisy then that would be a hard sell in built up areas.

  3. The term ' Alternative technology ' is just that an alternative which is the semantic hype of oil barons and other greedy corporate leeches in their pathetic propaganda drive to discredit any competition or threat to their stranglehold on energy supply ..we are looking for complimentary systems to work alongside and diversify the situation so as not to be beholden to any ONE, it's not a case of one monopoly or another which would profit a few energy barons at the expense of our environment and our well-being!!
    The Trolls of the crooks always come out looking to shoot down any idea before it has a chance to develop…even those horrible and inefficient 'wind farms' where put in place by the likes of BP !!!! Go figure if you have one brain cell.

  4. On a small scale those things are ok. They have certain benefits over small regular bladed turbines, no doubt. But they have a rather low efficiency and therefore roe when you start scaling them up. They are great for the small remote location that only needs a bit of energy, like a small and efficient house. But to power industry with them? That would cost you more then building the regular ones (esp. with the new, ultra light variants that are produced right now like the ecoSwing).

  5. Vertical Wind Turbines have existed in all shapes and forms. In fact, there is a large Wind mill of Vertical nature just a few miles from me. But they haven't built another one since it doesn't pay out… The Traditional Wind Turbine produces more Electricity per spin and scales a lot better in terms of space in comparison to a vertical turbine. How ever, Vertical turbines work very well in smaller scales. It is probably around that area, where they win over the traditional Wind Turbine… But that wouldn't be enough electricity to charge a large city.

    As for a Wind Mill burning up due "Excessive wind speed" ? Those must be old turbines since most modern turbines have DC breaks and generally when you reach a certain KM/H wind, it will shut off fully while the wind mill itself will position itself in a way that the wind can't grant spinning motion to the blades.

    Modern Traditional Wind turbines;
    * Can rotate 360 degrees for optimal wind conditions.
    * Have DC breaks which is essentially magnet breaks which keeps the wind mills at a certain speed for optimal produce. More power to the DC Break, the more electricity is produced.
    * Larger blade+height = More produce.

  6. This design offers very little advantage over the conventional design. The surface area of the blade is much larger so the weight and size is much larger. so much its impractical at the large scale. Efficient at the small scale but that's not going replace big wind turbines.

    So essentially you can't even compare the two.

  7. why not use lighter material? you are turning kinetic energy into electricity..the heavier the material is the more force is needed to push it…put simply lighter materials are far better for this purpose..so long as the material is strong and light enough there should not be any real problems.

  8. Any conventional wind turbine that over-speeds is a very crude device or a broken one. Those here in Oregon and Washington have variable pitch blades, can even be feathered while facing into the wind and not turn at all, no matter how fast the wind, which is also done when requirements are low.

  9. What a waste of taxpayers money 7.58 only when the wind blows full speed.
    Let's see you can pay 90cents or 6cents for coal and there is clean coal now. Are you willing to watch your jobs go away as they are forced to relocate, no one wants to pay for this crap.

  10. These companys SHOULD MAKE TIMELAPSE OF THESE BEING BUILT. Nice clouds, sunsets, etc..good promotional footage.

    MOUNT THEM ON OTHER WIND GENERATORS.

    This was a great vid and music choice

    Thumbs up👍

  12. Looks like another kraut propaganda video. These things may work were it is windy as in 30 mph winds for most of the day but for most locations on the planet they are useless…solar is a much better and more universal solution. Solar is probably even a better option where these wind turbines are located…at something like 20 million dollars per turbine generating 8 MW thats something like $2.50/watt – solar installations are already down to under 1 dollar per watt for large installations…so this stuff is just these people arrogantly parading their country's technological solutions….they act as if they don't make mistakes but we all remember the Hindenburg.

  13. watched your video and it is good, but where is the Windmill that has the helicopter next to the platform? that's the trouble with some of these video's, the show one thing to get you to watch and then you do not see what you was interested in

  14. They are foolish and completely unrelated. They installed a wind turbine in the woods. They destroy the nature. Only around big cities wind turbines must be installed.
