Pamela Ronald studies the genes that make plants more resistant to disease and stress. In an eye-opening talk, she describes her decade-long quest to help create a variety of rice that can survive prolonged flooding. She shows how the genetic improvement of seeds saved the Hawaiian papaya crop in the 1950s — and makes the case that it may simply be the most effective way to enhance food security for our planet’s growing population.

  1. Thank you Paulette you did a beautiful job. So many people willing to defend companies and products they know nothing about. If you choose to eat gmo go right ahead, it's everywhere. But why disparage those who are living a clean lifestyle. Go and make your own channel and videos showing all the virtues and health benefits of Monsanto and genetically engineered food products

  2. What you need to know about your Food Supply and how to
    protect yourself family and friends.

1-Corn is at the top of the list for the largest cash crop
    of  GMO genetically modified organism
created by Monsanto bio tech agricultural 100 year old company that created the
WAR Chemical Agent Orange used to decimate the rain forests of the Vietnam War
era to locate and kill the enemy. More than half of the American farmlands are
currently growing GMO corn for the fake process food industry.

Price look up code stickers are used to manage produce inventory
such as a 9 in the front of a 4 digit number. If the number is an 8 in the
front of the 4 digit label then this is GE Genetically Modified Foods.
Unfortunately in North America labelling is not required by law and currently
the American diet is about 80 percent GMO.
So really no one knows what is round up treated and what is organic
since the government has punished the organic farmers with expensive certification
laws leaving the door wide open for consumerism abuse that is unquestionably
happening today in our run away food supply.

Many countries are banning imports of US made produce meats
    and dairy for this reason.

Why is the GMO issue such a big deal for you to know?

Fact A- The WHO World Health Organization has now publicly
stated that they consider Round Up Ready that contains the weed killer named
Glyphosate is a probable human cancer causing carcinogen.

Fact B- Independent lab work showed cancer tumor growth in
all of their tested animals. The GMO industry conducted much shorter time
window tests to cover up the long term study results.

Fact C-Many countries around the world outright ban the use
of GMO and the import of GMO products . One such country named Sri Lanka
recently as of this writing banned Monsanto and all GMOs after their study revealed
many farmers coming down with kidney failure and a result of many deaths.

  8. Nobody has ever stood in the way of plant breeding or grafting. We have been using said techniques for roughly 10,000 years; the effort to conflate GMO (whose first harvests were in the 1990's) with millennia old plant breeding is utterly disingenuous. Nature takes care of the configuration when grafting or plant breeding but when corporate scientists splice individual genes in a foodstuff then release it to market without adequate health and safety testing, it effectively turns the human population into guinea pigs. Another reason GMO's are potentially dangerous is because of the patent situation. As soon as you start patenting food, you necessarily exclude the poorest 50% of the earth's population, the majority of which are hovering on or below subsistence. The reports of higher nutrition and increased yields have not been demonstrated, and often are no better than their conventional crop counterparts. Let the corporations play their stupid patent wars with software, electronics, engineering, etc but we can't allow them to include food in this. The most basic of needs.

  9. when she says "we can help millions of farmers" she means they are giving away the seeds for free, right?

    oh what? not for free?

awe, i thought these people were all about feeding the world and philanthropic works…

  10. Her last statement kind of pissed me off. "But then you'd be stuck eating frass, there's no purity in that" Her husband should slap her because if he uses bt it's to minimize herbivorous insects that target his crops for example if it is a certain kind of beetle infestation they will use an insecticide with pyrithins (butchered spelling). Either way insect frass is probably the purest and most fundamental nutrient that nature could ever provide. That is irrigardless of aquaponic innovations because that water can be pumped with insect frass solution or fish doodoo or whatever source of nutrient supply you choose. Don't completely dispell genetic engineering of foods, but carefully distinguish what is necessary, and what not.

  14. if you have been part of this problem or have been ignorant to this problem if you have even turned your head at this problem before but now are feeling possibly guilty for what you are potentially doing to your children grandchildren and other future defendants it is understandable but we are at a point now that there is no excuse the evidence is too strong don't contribute to the harm of our living world and all of us living creatures

  15. there are other ways to solve problems besides poisoning our world with poisons that are once put in place continue to reside in this planet why was the Papaya having trouble in the first place why wasn't the cause looked at and delt with deal with the problem at the cause don't change fix the thing that's not broke if other countries want to poison our earth than that's just politics but Americans should be smarter if the land is flooding fix the problem of the global warming that's causing the problem there is nothing wrong with rice it is just there trying to show there is a problem with the earth but instead of fixing it you are making it worse

  18. Biotechnology companies have been able to obtain patents to restrict GMOs crops. As a result, the companies that make GMOs have the power to sue farmers whose fields are contaminated with GMOs, even when it is the result of inevitable drift from neighboring fields , GMOs pose a serious threat to farmer sovereignty and to the national food security. More than 80% of all GMOs grown worldwide are engineered for herbicide tolerance. As a result, use of toxic herbicides like Roundup has increased 16 times. GM crops are responsible for herbicide resistant “super weeds” and “super bugs,” which can only be killed with more toxic poisons like 2,4-D (a major ingredient in Agent Orange) GMOs are a direct extension of chemical agriculture and are developed and sold by the world’s biggest chemical companies. The long-term impacts of GMOs are unknown, and once released into the environment, these novel organisms cannot be recalled.

  20. Now let's discus the economic model for publicly traded bio tech companies. Patents on nature, mergers and law suits to farmers victims of DRIFT and saving seeds. Pro GMO scientists ALWAYS avoid this conversation of the ethics of intellectual property and economic control over our food to establish mono crop agriculture. I see a flaw in morality when the industry integrates the greed of giant players on wall street.

  21. I am not against GMO, contrary I support this for various reasons but under circumstances. I have been studying agronomy/agricultural development for 1,5 years now and from the quite basic knowledge in genetics and ecology I have gained so far, I would like to express some thoughts.
I wonder which are the ecological and genetic consequences of "releasing" GMO plants in nature (having GMO plants cultivated outdoors instead of in a greenhouse) since the DNA "legacy" each species has is "invaded" (through pollination with their GMO counterparts) with somewhat foreign gene sequences i.e bacterial (like the Bt) or viral genes that are inserted to the GMO plant genome. It certainly increases the gene diversity of the plant- thus the probability of this genetically "rich" plant to survive many stress factors- though doesn't it also have a genetic impact on the "wild type" plants? And what is the aftermath of such a "GMO genome release" in the long run in nature (where the DNA is standard for a set of species and not "mixed and matched" like the GMO) both ecologically and genetically
I respect the principals stated in this video, although I cant help but think all of these things I mentioned above

P.S.1. I took the time to compose and post this comment in order to state a thought of mine. not to spark any controversies. i would be glad if someone (who is experienced in the field) could answer and/or discuss this matter.
P.S.2 sorry if my English is not as good. I am not a native speaker
